What is Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the colon or the rectum, which are the last parts of the digestive system. These organs help process waste and move stool out of the body.
Most colorectal cancers start as small growths called polyps on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Many polyps are harmless, but some can slowly turn into cancer over several years if they aren’t found and removed. Over time, certain cells in the lining of the colon or rectum can begin to grow abnormally and uncontrollably. When these cells form a tumor that can invade nearby tissue or spread to other parts of the body, it is considered cancer.
Understanding Colorectal Cancer
Welcome to the Colorectal Cancer Info page by Daniel's Friends. Here, we aim to provide clear and accessible information about colorectal cancer and the support we offer to those navigating this diagnosis.

Common Symptoms
Some people have no symptoms at first, which is why screening is important. When symptoms do appear, they may include:
- Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or narrower stools)
- Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue

Our Support for the LGBTQ+ Community
People in the LGBTQ+ community sometimes face barriers like discrimination, mistrust of healthcare systems, or lack of inclusive providers. These issues can lead to delayed screenings and later diagnoses.
Daniel's Friends specifically helps by:
- Educating patients about screening and symptoms
- Connecting them with LGBTQ+-affirming doctors and clinics
- Advocating for equitable healthcare policies
- Providing essential services such as transportation to appointments, care packages, emotional support, food, and clothing.
Our mission at Daniel's Friends is to ensure that everyone, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community, has access to the care and support they need to face colorectal cancer.
